Planning for Holiday Road Trips

Posted October 21, 2015

The holiday season is upon us! This time of year is packed full of celebration and festivities, from Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas and New Year’s Day. But if you’re planning on packing the car for a cross state or country trip to be with family this winter, make sure your vehicle is prepared for the journey.

The best thing you can do is start with a pre-trip inspection. The ASE Certified technicians at Kenny’s Lakes Area Auto Experts will thoroughly inspect your vehicle, checking all the components that keep you safe on the road. Your vehicle’s tires, brakes, battery, and cooling system are put to the test on long road trips. Make sure they are up for the task BEFORE you head out!

There are a few things you can check yourself before you leave. Check your tire pressure (with a low cost pressure gauge or using the air pump at the gas station) to make sure they are filled to optimum pressure. Top off your windshield wiper fluid and check your wiper blades. You can even glance under the hood to check for corrosion on your battery or check your fluid levels.

But a few things should be left to the professionals. You won’t be able to spot lurking issues with your oil, coolant, or transmission fluid with a quick glance under the hood. If your vehicle is due for preventative maintenance services, you’ll want to have an ASE Certified technician take care of those before you leave as well.

If you have noticed even a small change in your vehicle’s performance… whether it’s a new noise or a strange smell or a slight pull or lag… have it inspected as soon as possible. Small latent issues can quickly turn into major problems when your vehicle is under load, like on long road trips. Schedule an appointment by calling our technicians at (248) 668-1200.
